Have you ever come across online news about tap water becoming contaminated or having an unpleasant odor, and worried that you water may suffer the same fate someday?
Water quality issues with tap water in Malaysia have long been a subject of concern. In order to use water with peace of mind and prevent contamination of water pipes that can lead to blockages, many households opt to install outdoor water filters before moving into their new home to ensure the safety and quality of household water.
Nowadays, there are too many choices of outdoor filter brands in the market, which can be confusing and frustrating for first-time buyers or those who haven’t delved deep into the subject. Many end up choosing based on price. As a result, they realize that the filter doesn’t meet their needs after installing it for a while. At that point, they can only use it even though reluctantly. It’s important to note that an outdoor water filter is not inexpensive, and one hopes to use it for several years.
This article will give you a comprehensive understanding of the types of outdoor water filters in Malaysia, including their advantages and disadvantages, so that you can make an informed choice according to your own needs! In fact, there are only 3 types of technologies: sand filter, canvas filter and membrane filter.
Sand Filter
Sand Filter uses a multi-layered sand filtration process to remove particles, sediments, and various impurities in tap water with a density greater than 10 microns. However, as a consequence, the water that flows out after filtration appears relatively contaminated.
This traditional technology has a history of over 50 years and it’s outdated. Its maintenance and upkeep are somewhat similar to membrane filter, with regular flushing and backwash. The difference is its backwash requires longer time with at least 15 minutes or more and the painful part is much water is wasted in this process.
Additionally, maintenance costs are relatively high as the sand within the sand filter needs to be replaced every year, which means the entire unit needs to be replaced to maintain the filtration effectiveness.
Canvas Filter
Canvas Filter uses high-density canvas material for filtration. It has a slightly better filtering effect compared to the sand filter, as it can remove harmful impurities with a density equivalent to 10 microns. However, maintenance for this outdoor water filter is more complicated. It cannot flush or backwash the accumulated harmful impurities in the filter. As a result, periodic on-site cleaning and filter cartridge replacement by professionals are necessary for every 6 months or 1 year, which can be quite costly.
Membrane Filter
Membrane Filter utilizes advanced ultrafiltration membrane technology and has the finest filtering effect, which can block harmful impurities as small as 0.01 micron. It’s 1000 times cleaner than sand and canvas outdoor water filters and can even filter out bacteria.
